MANHATTAN, Kan. Sophomore libero Lauren Mathewson was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for her performances against Missouri and Oklahoma. Mathewson paced the Big 12 in digs on the week, collecting 5.56 per set.
Against Missouri, she had 20 digs with three assists in four sets. She then compiled a career-high 30 digs at Oklahoma. Mathewson helped hold the Sooners to a .176 hitting percentage in a come-from-behind victory after OU had match point in the third set. Mathewson logged just two reception errors in 101 attempts to register a .980 serve receive percentage.
This is Mathewson’s first career player of the week award from the Big 12 and the third total on the season for the Wildcats. Mathewson was joined by two Longhorns in this week’s awards as Ashley Engle was named Offensive Player and the Week and Michelle Kocher earned Rookie of the Week for Texas.
