MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State middle blocker Kaitlynn Pelger has played a key role in helping the Wildcat volleyball to its best start in school history at 9-0, and on Tuesday she was recognized by Collegiate Volleyball Update as its CVU.com National Player of the Week for her efforts in three sweeps last week at home.
Pelger and the Wildcats defeated Missouri State, Saint Mary’s and Utah State all in straight sets to improve to 9-0 on the year, and the junior led the team in kills, digs and blocks playing all six rotations, something rare among players at her position.
Against Missouri State on Wednesday, Pelger posted a double-double with 11 kills and 10 blocks. She added seven digs to her defensive stats and hit for a .304 percentage. It marked her second double-double with kills and blocks against Missouri State in her career, doing so last season on the road as well. Pelger followed Wednesday’s performance with eight kills against Saint Mary’s on Thursday and closed with week with her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs against Utah State on Saturday. She also had six blocks. For the week, Pelger averaged 3.33 kills, 2.56 digs and 2.11 blocks while hitting .286.
This is the second time Pelger has been recognized as the CVU.com National Player of the Week, and it is the third overall CVU.com National Player of the Week award for K-State with Stacey Spiegelberg earning in Nov. 27, 2006.
Pelger and the Wildcats travel to Tulsa, Okla., this week for the Golden Hurricane Classic. It will be one of the top tournaments in the nation this week with No. 10 Minnesota, No. 20 Dayton and NCAA Tournament regular Tulsa on the slate for the No. 19-ranked Wildcats.
