Volleyball Remains Unbeaten, Sweeps Creighton


 

 
 

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State volleyball opened its home slate Tuesday night in Ahearn Field House with a similar result to its first five road matches, with a win. The 24th-ranked Wildcats dropped Creighton, 3-0 (30-16, 30-27, 30-23) in front of 820 fans.

 

K-State (6-0, 0-0 Big 12) was paced by junior outside hitter Sandy Werner with 15 kills on 30 total attempts. Senior outside hitter Agata Rezende tallied a team-high in hitting percentage Tuesday with a .533 and eight kills and five block assists. Junior middle blocker Joy Hamlin registered seven kills and five blocks

 

Sophomore setter Stacey Spiegelberg registered 38 assists, two service aces, three digs and three kills. It is the first time this season the Overland Park, Kan., native has not reached the 40 assist mark in a match. Sophomore libero Angie Lastra recorded 15 digs and three services aces.

 

For the match, the Wildcats hit .306 while the Bluejays were held to .100. It is the first time since Aug. 27 the Wildcats surpassed the .300 mark in hitting percentage. The hitting percentage by Creighton was the second-lowest opponent hitting percentage this season.

 

Leading Creighton was Kelly Goc with 11 kills on a .304 hitting percentage. Korie Lebeda paced the Bluejays in assists with 33 and Brittany Coleman led in digs with 14.

 

The win for the Wildcats places them in a four-way tie for the second-best start in school history. The 1988 squad opened with an 8-0 record.

 

Kansas State will continue its four-match homestand in the Varney’s Kansas State Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats will take on Florida State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. K-State will welcome Houston to Manhattan at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and the fifth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers at 7:30 p.m. For ticket information, call 1-800-221-CATS.
