MANHATTAN, Kan. No. 25 Kansas State won its 14^th straight home opener, setting down Lipscomb, 3-0 (30-13, 30-19, 30-10) in the opening match of the Varney’s Kansas State Invitational early Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats utilized a balanced attack in Ahearn Field House, hitting a season-high .465 for the match and eight players recording a dig. K-State notched a season-high for kills in a three-game match with 53. The K-State defense was also up to the task, holding the Bison to a -.021 hitting percentage with just 19 kills and the Wildcats’ recording 10 total blocks.

Senior Sandy Werner led K-State with 13 kills on a personal season-high .440 hitting percentage. The Topeka, Kan., native chipped in on defense with seven digs and four block assists. Also recording double figures in kills for K-State were sophomore Megan Farr and redshirt freshman Ginta Gabruseva with 10 apiece.

To go along with Farr’s season-high in kills, the Manhattan, Kan., native added a season-best in hitting percentage at .643 and a career-high in blocks with six.

The Wildcats recorded a season-high in hitting percentage for a game with a .516 pace in game one. K-State stretched its lead midway through the frame with a 15-3 run to hold a 24-10 lead following a Werner kill. K-State held Lipscomb to a -.120 hitting percentage to win the game 30-13.

K-State continued to force the action in game two, carding a .474 hitting percentage in the game. The Wildcats took charge against the Bison with a 9-2 run to hold an 18-10 advantage. During the run junior Stacey Spiegelberg recorded a service ace, which is the 229^th straight match the Wildcats have recorded an ace. Spiegelberg closed the game two win at 30-19 with her second ace of the afternoon.

In game three, the Wildcats jumped to a 14-2 advantage on the Bison and never looked back, winning the final game 30-10. The point total by the Bison is the lowest opponent game output since Sept. 9, 2003, when K-State held UMKC to nine points in game one.

The Varney’s Kansas State Invitational continues at 5 p.m. with Montana State and Lipscomb taking to the floor. K-State returns to Terina Irsik Memorial Court at 7:30 p.m. to take on intrastate rival Wichita State at 7:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear purple for “Purple Haze Night” in Ahearn Field House.
