Wildcats Begin Preparing for European Trip
MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State volleyball team began preparation for its upcoming European tour with the Wildcats' first practice on Saturday. The Wildcats leave for Budapest, Hungary on May 24 to begin a one-week tour that includes stops in Slovenia and Italy with a full slate of volleyball, site seeing and cultural experiences along the way.
K-State head coach Suzie Fritz said she is excited for this trip because it will do a number of things for her student-athletes.
"This trip will allow us to get more time together on the court both in practice and in competition, which will only help us prepare for the 2010 season," Fritz said. "It also is an exciting experience for our girls because most of them have never been overseas before. From a cultural standpoint and getting to see the places we're going will be an experience they may never get to enjoy again."
The Wildcats have 10 days to practice prior to leaving for the trip per NCAA rules and Fritz said she and her staff will take advantage of the time in the gym to help the team continue to mold and grow together for the upcoming season that includes 11 NCAA Tournament teams on the schedule.
Upon arrival in Budapest, the Wildcats will play the Hungarian National Team for their first friendly match. K-State will also play the Vasas Sport Club team giving the Wildcats a chance to see what a future teammate can do on the court.
Lilla Porubek plays for Vasas and has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Wildcats in the fall. Her mother is a Hungarian legend of sorts playing for the Hungarian National Team for more than 20 years and playing professionally in Europe as well.
After two days in Budapest, the Wildcats will head to Ljublana,Slovenia, for two days of more competition and absorbing the capital city of Slovenia. Then, it's off to Venice for the final two days of the trip for more exciting volleyball action. While in the City of Water, the Wildcats will enjoy something every traveler to Venice looks forward to - a traditional gondola ride through the city.
