Recap |  Box Score

Head coach Suzie Fritz

On Cal Poly stepping up late in the third set…

“We had a few unforced errors [in the third], but I thought they upgraded more. The difference wasn’t necessarily what we were doing, but what they were doing. They are a team when they are in system and passing well, their speed can cause a great deal of problems. In the first two games, we did a nice job of serving them out of that speed.”

On the importance of K-State’s serves throughout the match…

“The ability to eliminate some options is essential. They are playing fast everywhere, and our defensive philosophy is to obviously get more blockers there than fewer. That can be difficult to do when they are playing that fast. We managed the speed pretty well. We didn’t stuff a lot of balls, but we got our hands on them to give our defense a chance to respond.”

On the difference between Thursday’s and Friday’s matches…

“Our digs are up and our kills are up [on Friday]. We are in longer rallies because we are digging more balls and we’re being more terminal with better attacking choices. We were significantly better at that on Friday.”

On K-State’s defensive mentality going into the match…

“We’re going to fight for points. We knew two things going into the match: they are going to play long rallies, and they are going to play fast. We prepared ourselves for that. If they are going to dig a lot of balls, then we need to dig a lot of balls. Our defensive effort was excellent.”

Senior outside hitter Lilla Porubek

The difference between last night’s and Friday’s match…

“We had a really good practice this morning. We worked with Katie [Brand] on the rhythm all morning, and brought it to the match.”

On working with setter Katie Brand…

“I personally went up to Katie and said, ‘I want to take more swings.’ She’s always willing to work together. She’s also my roommate, so we talked a lot yesterday on what was going well and what was not going well. We figured it out between Thursday and Friday.”

On the defense…

“There are some cases when you take a swing and you get the ball back. It’s really important how you keep managing the ball. Our back row was amazing. We dug a lot of balls, and that was much needed.”
