Rosenberg, Kvaratskhelia Among Top 10 in ITA Central Regional Ranking

MANHATTAN -  The first ITA Central Regional rankings have been announced and four Kansas State Wildcats have been named to the list. The four Wildcats are senior Maria Rosenberg and freshman Tamar Kvaratskhelia in the singles and doubles rankings and junior Jessica Simosa and freshman Olga Klimova on the doubles listing. Rosenberg and Kvaratskhelia are both among the top-10 in the ranking.

Rosenberg is ranked seventh in the region and entered the fall ranked No. 105 in the preseason ITA national ranking. The Manhattan, Kan., native had a successful beginning to her senior season, going 12-7 in singles matches and moved into second place on the Kansas State career singles win list with 68. She trails career leader Petra Sedlmajerova by just nine singles wins (77). Rosenberg is one of just three seniors in the top-10 of the ITA Central Region ranking.

Kvaratskhelia, ranked ninth in the ITA Central Region, has had one of the most successful rookie campaigns in Kansas State women’s tennis history. The Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia native won her first 11 singles matches of the season, won two fall tournament titles (the Ole Miss Fall Classic, Sept. 26 and the Hoosier Classic, Oct. 10) and finished with a record of 15-2 in the fall. The consecutive match win streak is the longest by a freshman since Rosenberg won six in a row to begin her career in 2001. Kvaratskhelia is the only freshman to be ranked in the top-10 and the highest of five freshmen on the list.

The pair of Rosenberg and Kvaratskhelia are also ranked fifth as a doubles team. The duo played in just two tournaments together, but registered a 4-2 record. Rosenberg is two wins short of tying Kathy Chuda for fifth place on the all-time doubles win list with 57. Rosenberg was an All-Big 12 doubles selection in 2004 with playing partner Paulina Castillejos. The pair was also named the top doubles pair in the conference.

“Both Maria and Tamar had a solid fall season and it is nice for them to receive this recognition for their efforts,” said head coach Steve Bietau.

Also representing the Wildcats on the doubles ranking was Simosa and Klimova. The tandem is ranked 12th in the region and played in two tournaments together, the Wilson/ITA Region V Championships and the ASU/Thunderbird Invitational, and registering a 4-2 record.

“As a team we had a good fall and it is clear some progress is being made,” said Bietau. “Depth has been an issue for us, but it is great to see the second doubles team on the ranking and that we now have some options.”

The four Wildcats are the most to reach the preseason ITA Central Region ranking since the 2003 season when K-State saw three players, Petra Sedlmajerova (14th), Maria Rosenberg (15th) and Hayley McIver (28th) ranked among the top-30 in the singles ranking.

Kansas State will open the 2005 season against Drake, January 22 at 12:00 p.m. on the courts of the Cottonwood Racquet Club.
