Rosenberg, Kvaratskhelia Advance at Wilson/ITA Regional


 

 
 

TULSA, Okla. -  The opening round of the main draw at the Wilson/ITA Region V Championships commenced on Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa. Kansas State advanced two players from the singles round of 64 to Friday’s round of 32 and both sets of doubles to the round of 16.

Senior Maria Rosenberg and freshman Tamar Kvaratskhelia won their respective matches, each winning in straight sets. Rosenberg, ranked No. 105 in the preseason ITA rankings and seeded number seven in this weekend’s tournament, dispatched of Bindiya Parekh of Arkansas-Little Rock, 6-2, 6-4. The Manhattan, Kan., native is now tied with 1994 ITA All-American Karina Kuregian for fourth place on the school’s all-time singles win list (63).

Kvaratskhelia started main draw play where she left off from Wednesday’s qualifier, with a win. The Tbilisi, Georgia, native defeated the number nine seed Maryori Franco of Arkansas, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Kvaratskhelia’s fall singles win streak and career record now stand at 10-0.

The tandem of Rosenberg and Kvaratskhelia is also pair for doubles play. They entered the round of 32 doubles play as the number 10 seed and had a first round bye. The duo will begin doubles play on Friday at 9 a.m.

Other Wildcats in action on Thursday were junior Jessica Simosa and freshman Olga Klimova. Simosa fell in three sets to Pamela Castellejos of Nebraska, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Simosa’s fall singles record now stands at 4-5. Klimova is paired with Simosa in doubles play. The tandem defeated Liz Garza/Paty Manzur of Southwest Missouri State, 8-2. The duo will now play in tomorrows round of 16.
