TULSA, Okla. Kansas State earned four wins in the opening round of play in the singles main draw at the ITA Central Region Tournament on Wednesday.

Olga Klimova, Katerina Kudlackova, Tamar Kvaratskhelia and Viviana Yrureta all won their opening round matches at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, and advanced to Friday’s round of 34.

“We were pretty solid all-around today,” Kansas State head coach Steve Bietau said. “I was particularly happy to see Olga play at that level and have no problems with her knee.”

Klimova, who missed the Indiana Hoosier Invitational while nursing a sore knee, topped Oklahoma’s Chelsea Orr, 6-3, 7-5, for the Wildcats’ first of two wins over the Sooners on Thursday. Kudlackova notched the second, defeating OU’s Rachel Cox, 6-1, 6-2.

Yrureta, seeded No. 7 in the main draw field of 64, defeated Tulsa’s Marta Marcinkowska in straight sets and pushed her team-leading winning streak to six matches. Kvaratskhelia, seeded No. 8, handled Wichita State’s Olga Elkin, 6-1, 6-2.

“We played well, but I expect much tougher competition at every position in the second round,” Bietau said.

In doubles play, all three Kansas State teams earned first round byes and began second round competition late Thursday night.

Play continues throughout the weekend and culminates with Sunday’s championship matches. The winners of the singles and doubles draws will receive an automatic bid into the Wilson/ITA Indoor National Championship hosted by Ohio State University.
