Rosenberg One Win from Qualifying Round of Riviera/All-American

LOS ANGELES - Maria Rosenberg of Kansas State has advanced to the final round of the pre-qualifier at the Riviera/All-American Championship. The senior won two matches on Sunday to reach Monday’s final match.

The senior from Manhattan, Kan., defeated Nika Koukhartchouk of Ole Miss in the morning, 6-3, 6-4. Rosenberg lost to Koukhartchouk at last weekend’s Ole Miss Fall Classic, 7-5, 7-5. Rosenberg continued to the afternoon singles matchup against Lauren Archer of Duke. After winning the first set 6-2, the preseason ITA number 105 and number seven seed in the pre-qualifying round, dropped the second set, 3-6. Rosenberg made a quick recovery and dispatched of Archer, 6-1 in the third set.

Rosenberg, who is now just two wins from fifth place for career singles wins at Kansas State, will play her fourth match in three days on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. (PDT) against Zsuzana Fodor of Mississippi State. Head coach Steve Bietau does not think fitness will be an issue for Rosenberg.

“There aren’t too many players fitter than Maria at this point in the season. If she continues to advance, it could pose a problem, but right now she is in great shape.”

The Wildcats other representative at the Riviera/All-American Championship, Jessica Simosa, dropped her morning match against Helena Besovic of TCU, 6-2, 6-3. Simosa’s fall record is now even at 3-3.

“The more matches they can get in this type of environment is a positive,” said Bietau. “Jess seems to be approaching this in a way that she can benefit from this.”
