Wildcats Advance to Semifinals of Hoosier Classic
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Kansas State's top women's doubles team of junior Maria Rosenberg and senior Hayley McIver advanced past the opening round of play Friday at the 2003 Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana. In the top doubles flight, Rosenberg and McIver defeated Eastern Michigan's Victoria Domina and Kendra Clark, 8-6. The Wildcat duo later beat LSU's Marina Chiarelli and Amanda Mang, 8-3, to move on to tomorrow's semifinals, where they will face Indiana's preseason No. 28-ranked doubles team of Katie Schlukebir and Linda Tran. Senior Paulina Castillejos and sophomore Jessica Simosa also advanced to tomorrow's semifinal action with a 9-8 tiebreaker victory over IU's Dora Vastag and Laura McGaffigan in the opening round and an 8-1 victory over Louisville's Kelly Taylor and Christina Gogol in the quarterfinals. In singles competition, Castillejos and McIver were the only Wildcats to claim victories in their respective flights. Castillejos defeated Louisville's Taylor in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, while McIver made a three-set comeback versus Iowa's Gloria Okino, 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10). The Wildcats will continue singles and doubles play tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m.
