Rosenberg, Simosa Cruise at Riviera/All-American

LOS ANGELES - Senior Maria Rosenberg and junior Jessica Simosa opened play at the Riviera/All-American Championship pre-qualifying with straight set singles wins on Saturday. The duo is representing Kansas State in one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the country.

Rosenberg, ranked 105th in the preseason ITA rankings and seeded seventh overall in the pre-qualifying round, defeated Chelsey Thompson of Cal-Poly 6-1, 6-1. The win evens Rosenberg’s fall record to 2-2 and places her four victories shy of fifth on the career singles win list with 58. Rosenberg’s next opponent on Sunday will be Nika Koukhartchouk of Ole Miss. Koukhartchouk is responsible for one of Rosenberg’s fall defeats, winning 7-5, 7-5, at last weekend’s Ole Miss Fall Classic.

Simosa defeated Madison Sellers of Wisconsin, 6-2, 6-0 and ran her fall mark to 3-2. Simosa will play Helena Besovic of TCU on Sunday. Both Rosenberg and Simosa, if victorious, will play two rounds on Sunday.

The pair did not fair as well in doubles action, losing 8-4 to Wang/O’Riano of Harvard. The Wildcats are eliminated from contention in doubles play, but charge on in singles action.

“It was good for both of them to play easier matches in singles play today,” said head coach Steve Bietau. “They were both able to conserve energy for later in the pre-qualifer with the quick wins.”

Eight players will advance from the three day pre-qualifying round and into the 64-player qualifier.
