BLOOMINGTON, Ind. With a 7-0 record in first round match-ups at the Indiana Hoosier Classic on Friday, the Kansas State Wildcat tennis team moved every singles player into the winner’s bracket and a chance to play for at least third in each individual flight. In all, five Wildcats will play for third place and two are in the flight championship.

“We got exactly what we needed today which was a lot of tough matches,” head coach Steve Bietau said. “There were some ups and downs but generally it was a very solid performance by our team.”

Viviana Yrureta survived a 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (8), tie break in her opening match with Kansas’ Brittany Brown, and cruised to a straight set win over Murray State’s Casady Pruitt to reach tomorrow’s final against Kelly Nelson of Notre Dame.

“What you have to remember is that she didn’t play a match all of last year - she’s really just getting going. She definitely played better than she did last weekend,” Bietau said. “She’s made some improvements and those things really showed in her matches today.”

Maria Perevoschikova, making her on-court debut for Kansas State, cruised through her flight with straight set wins over Adriana Alvarez (Murray State) and Stephanie Heller (Indiana). Perevoschikova will face Kansas’ Stephanie Smith in the finals.

Kansas State senior Jessica Simosa defeated Dora Vastag (Indiana) in her opening match before falling to Notre Dame’s Brook Buck. Vastag was ranked No. 90 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Pre-Season Rankings.

“It’s a good win. Jessica is continuing to play solid matches,” Bietau said. “Her consistency match in and match out is her biggest improvement from last year.”

K-State and the Hoosier Classic field will play two rounds of doubles tomorrow before finishing the singles flights.
