Veteran Cats Victorious at Hoosier Classic
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kansas State senior Natasha Vieira led a victorious Friday for the Wildcats at the Hoosier Classic, as K-State captured four singles and four doubles wins.
Vieira defeated Jordan Zachary of Mississippi State in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) earning her first win of the 2009-10 season. Since the 2007-08 season, Vieira has won five 3-set matches. This is her second straight win in a three-set match, defeating Ashley Finnegan of Nebraska on April 11, 2009. Junior Antea Huljev improved her record this season to 3-2 with a three-set victory of her own, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10) over Evgeniya Vertesheva of Indiana. In her career with the Wildcats, Huljev is 12-8 in three-set matches including a 5-3 mark last season. Also capturing wins on Friday afternoon were sophomores Petra Chuda and Nina Sertic. Chuda captured a straight set win over Danielle Terpko of Mississippi State, 6-0, 6-1. Sertic secured her first win of the season with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Kylie Ademak of LSU. In doubles action, the pairing of Huljev and Sertic advanced to the semifinals of the main draw with two wins on Friday. Huljev and Sertic opened the afternoon with a 9-7 win over Radka Ferancova and Valeria Makarycheva of Mississippi State. In the quarterfinals, Huljev and Sertic earned another 9-7 win, this time defeating Maria Guerreiro and Vertesheva of Indiana. Huljev and Sertic are now 4-1 on the season and have won four straight doubles matches and are 6-7 when paired together. The duo of Chuda and Vieira rebounded from an opening doubles loss to post their first win of the season. Chuda and Vieira defeated Danielle Terpko and Jordan Zachary of Mississppi State, 8-2, in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. Also capturing a doubles win in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket were the freshmen Karla Bonacic and Maryna Chumak. The rookie tandem defeated Natalia Mayuk and Olesya Tsigvintseva of Mississippi State, 8-6. Kansas State will continue action at the Hoosier Classic on Saturday morning with one singles match and two doubles matches. Hoosier Classic |
