Kvaratskhelia Garners Top-100 Pre-Season Ranking
Kvaratskhelia, who debuted at No. 95 in the singles rankings, shattered numerous K-State records last season en route to a 31-7 overall record and was named to the All-Big 12 Team for her singles play. Her 31 wins were the first time any Wildcat player has surpassed the 30-win total in a single season and the most since All-American Karina Kuregian’s 28 in 1994-95.
In all, Kvaratskhelia broke six records last season including the record for wins in a season, singles wins by a freshman, combined wins by a freshman, career and season singles winning percentage and winning streak by a freshman (13).
“Being ranked in the top-100 is a nice place to start the season for Tamar and it recognizes the tremendous year that she had last year,” K-State Coach Steve Bietau said. “I emphasize starting point because we hope that’s what it is that there are bigger and better things to come.”
Kvaratskhelia appeared at No. 89 in the April 5 singles rankings of 2005 and was ranked as high as No. 57 with the departed Maria Rosenberg in the doubles rankings on April 19.
The Wildcats open their fall tournament slate, when they travel to the Missouri Invitational on September 23. |
