Niedermayerova Named Academic All-Big 12

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State women’s tennis placed one student-athlete on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in an announcement by the league office on Tuesday. The lone honoree for the Wildcats was senior Petra Niedermayerova, who earned her third career first team citation and for the second straight season was one of two women’s tennis student-athletes to be named to the team with a perfect grade point average.

In the history of the Big 12, K-State women’s tennis has had 19 student-athletes earn 39 first team selections and seven student-athletes earn nine second team citations. Niedermayerova became the ninth women’s tennis student-athlete at K-State to earn three Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, the women’s tennis academic all-league team consisted of 37 first team members and eight on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
    
The product of Brno, Czech Republic is an economics major who boasts a stellar 3.97 cumulative GPA. In addition to earning her third Academic All-Big 12 First Team honor, Niedermayerova garnered Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large First Team honors in 2013 and is a two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete selection.

On the court this season, Niedermayerova, who is ranked No. 51 in the ITA singles rankings, owns a record of 23-9 while playing in the number one position in the K-State lineup. This is her fourth straight season with 20 or more singles wins in a season, which is a school record.

Earlier this season, Niedermayerova set the school record for doubles wins in a career with her record of 74-49.

Within the economics department, Niedermayerova has been highly decorated, as she was the recipient of the Dudley Williams Sophomore Book Prize, awarded annually to two outstanding sophomores by the Beta of Kansas Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in 2012 and the Duane L. and Leslee K. Cantrell Scholarship, based on outstanding academic performance & service to the economics department at K-State. She will graduate in May with her degree in economics and plans to pursue a Ph. D. in economics at Boston University beginning in the fall.

Kansas State enters the 2014 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championships as a number seven seed and will face number ten seed West Virginia in the first round on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas, at 10 a.m. Live results will be available at www.kstatesports.com and at www.big12sports.com.
