MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State will face a familiar opponent in its first round match in the 2008 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championships in College Station, Texas on Thursday. The No. 10 seed Wildcats will face its final regular season opponent, No. 7 seed Nebraska, at 1:30 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
K-State (7-13, 3-8 Big 12) is 8-11 all-time in the Big 12 Championship with the last win coming on April 27, 2006 against Oklahoma. This will be the first time the Wildcats face Nebraska in the Big 12 Championships since the 1999 season, with the Huskers winning that meeting 5-2.
The Wildcats have been paced recently by their doubles teams, winning three straight doubles points. The number three doubles pair of senior Viviana Yrureta and sophomore Natasha Vieira have a 5-3 record in Big 12 action and have won three straight.
Last weekend Nebraska (16-6, 5-6) defeated K-State, 6-1, at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Wildcats secured the doubles point for the third straight match, but were swept in singles action for the second time in the last three matches.
The winner of Thursday’s match will play No. 2 seed Texas (16-5, 10-1) on Friday at 3 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
