Wildcats Close Out Regular Season With 7-0 Loss at No. 12 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas In its regular season closer, the Kansas State women’s tennis team fell to No. 12-ranked Texas, 7-0, in Big 12 Conference play Sunday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

With the win, the Longhorns (17-4) extended their league record to an undefeated 8-0, while the Wildcats dropped to 5-14 overall and 1-10 in the Big 12. Texas, which stands second in the latest league standings behind No. 16 Texas A&M, remains in the hunt for a conference regular season title.

K-State’s closest doubles match of the day came at the No. 1 position, where Maria Rosenberg and Paulina Castillejos held a 7-4 lead, but later lost with a five-point comeback by UT’s Katie Ruckert and Kendra Strohm, 9-7. In singles competition, Rosenberg suffered a 6-1, 6-4 loss to No. 18-ranked Petra Dizdar at the No. 1 spot, as the Wildcats lost in straight sets in the remaining singles lineup.

“In doubles play we were in a familiar position, where we had the chance to win at No. 1,” Head Coach Steve Bietau said. “We were beat handily at the No. 2 and 3 positions and Maria and Paulina were unable to close it out when they had the chance. Singles play was one-sided and Maria was the only one able to make a dent in the play of Texas.

“We are going to take a couple of days off to recover from the travel and tough matches. When we start up again on Wednesday, we will have more of an idea of what team we will be preparing to play (in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament).”

The Wildcats will return to action on April 29-May 2 in Norman, Okla., site of this year’s Big 12 Conference Tournament hosted by Oklahoma.
