MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State women’s tennis team lost a 6-1 decision to 44th-ranked Baylor Sunday afternoon at the Washburn Tennis Facility.
In their last home match of the season, the Wildcats were able to pick up two match victories against the visiting Bears (10-9, 6-2). Playing at the No. 2 singles position, sophomore Jessica Simosa defeated Baylor’s Daniela Covello in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, while teammate Maria Rosenberg fell to No. 41-ranked Carolin Walter, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Senior Paulina Castillejos came close, but lost a third-set tiebreaker to BU’s Daria Potapova, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (2), at the No. 3 spot.
“Baylor was too tough through the lineup,” Head Coach Steve Bietau said. “We played some very good matches at the top, but they pretty much handled us down below. With the quality and kind of depth that they have, that’s a tough combination to beat.”
In No. 1 doubles play, Rosenberg and Castillejos downed BU’s Walter and Potapova, 8-6. Overall, Rosenberg and Castillejos have compiled an 8-1 dual record in conference play, which is currently tops in the Big 12.
“I can’t say enough about Maria and Paulina,” said Bietau on their back-to-back No. 1 doubles wins this weekend. “They are such determined, tough-minded young women. To play as well as they have and, to put together the kind of record at No. 1, is outstanding.”
With two road matches remaining on the regular season slate, the Wildcats (5-12, 1-8) next travel to the Lone Star State to take on No. 14 Texas A&M on Saturday, April 17 at noon (CT) and No. 13 Texas on Sunday, April 18 at noon (CT).
