PROVO, Utah Kansas State lost the doubles point and the first five matches of singles play en route to a 6-1 loss to No. 20 Brigham Young at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts on Saturday.

K-State’s lone singles win came from Olga Klimova at No. 6 singles. Klimova, who tore a knee ligament against BYU in 2005 and was lost for the season, outlasted Jennifer Miccoli, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (12-10).

Klimova and Fernanda Da Valle earned the only doubles win at the No. 3 spot, defeating Lauren Jones and Dolly Chang.

A day after dropping the doubles point to Utah and rallying with five consecutive singles wins, the Wildcats were nearly swept away in straight sets by the Cougars (6-3), before Klimova’s gritty win. Klimova finished undefeated on the weekend, winning both her doubles matches and singles matches.

“With the exception of Olga’s match, we couldn’t do anything to stop them,” Kansas State head coach Steve Bietau said. “There were a couple matches where we should have played better.”

The Wildcats (2-2, 0-1) won the doubles point in a 7-0 defeat of Drake to open the season but have lost the point in the last three matches. Kansas State is 1-2 when losing the doubles point, losing to Texas Tech and the Cougars.

“We did some good things in doubles,” Bietau said despite the loss. “We made improvements at all three positions.”

Brigham Young started the season 5-0 but lost three straight matches to teams in the top 10 before beating the Wildcats on Saturday.

Kansas State returns to action on Thursday as they travel to No. 73 Tulsa. The Wildcats host Wichita State in Manhattan on Saturday.
