K-State Loses Close Match to 53rd-Ranked Arkansas
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Despite a quick 2-0 start by the doubles teams and No. 1 singles player Maria Rosenberg, the Kansas State women’s tennis team fell to 53rd-ranked Arkansas 4-3 at Dills Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. This is the second time this season that K-State has lost 4-3 to a ranked opponent (25th-ranked BYU, Jan. 28).
The Wildcats (1-3) snatched the doubles point to start the match 1-0. The pair of senior Maria Rosenberg and freshman Tamar Kvaratskhelia, ranked 60th in the nation, defeated Maryori Franco and Karina Ledaja 9-8. The second victory in doubles came at the hands of junior Jessica Simosa and senior Judith Diaz who dropped Vlatka Jovanovic and Melissa Cornett 8-6. With the win, the tandom of Simosa and Diaz remain undefeated on the year, winning three doubles matches in the fall and two in the spring.
In the number one match of singles play, Rosenberg recorded her 71st career sinlges win as she took care of Arkansas’ Maryori Franco 6-0, 6-4. Rosenberg, ranked 109th in the nation, is only 6 victories away from tying K-State’s career sinlges wins record, held by Petra Sedlmajerova with 77. The longest match of the day didn’t fall in K-State’s favor as Arkansas’ Vlatka Jovanovic squeeked out a win against Kvaratskhelia 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. K-State’s other singles win of the afternoon came from Simosa as she shut down Iliana Pacheco 6-2, 6-3. The win was Simosa’s second of the spring and 46th of her career.
K-State will have almost two weeks off before they play back-to-back home matches against Utah and SMS. The match against Utah is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 25 at 1:00 p.m. and the match against SMS is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 26 at noon. Both matches will be played at Ahearn Fieldhouse.
