K-State Set to Host Home Opener
MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State women's tennis returns to the Little Apple after a pair of wins to open the season, as the Wildcats open the 2010 home schedule on Saturday morning against Iowa at 11 a.m., at the Cottonwood Racquet Club. This will be K-State's third straight match against a squad from the state of Iowa.
The Wildcats (2-0) kicked off the 35th season of women's tennis at K-State on Jan. 30-31 in Des Moines, Iowa with wins over Northern Iowa and Drake. This is K-State's first 2-0 start since the 2008 campaign, when the Wildcats opened with a 4-0 mark. The lower portion of K-State's singles lineup and strong doubles play, aided the Wildcats in their opening wins.
Kansas State registered a perfect 6-0 record with straight set wins from singles positions 4-6 in the wins over Northern Iowa and Drake. Freshman Maryna Chumak and senior Natasha Vieira held down the number five and six positions, respectively, with 4-0 records. Chumak has won three straight singles matches to bring her record in her first season in Manhattan to 6-8. Vieira has won three of her last four outings and is 7-8 this season.
The Wildcats controlled the doubles point in both matches, winning five of the six matches. K-State's top tandem of junior Antea Huljev and sophomore Nina Sertic bolstered their record together this season to 9-5 with a pair of victories at the number one doubles position. With the wins, the duo ended a two-match downturn from the end of the fall slate in October at the Wilson/ITA Central Regional in Norman, Okla.
K-State and Iowa will meet for the sixth time in the history of the series, with the Hawkeyes holding a 4-1 lead. In the last meeting between the schools on March 19, 2008, No. 43-ranked Iowa defeated K-State 6-1 in Manhattan. This will be the third straight meeting in the series that has been played in Manhattan.
Following this weekend's match against the Hawkeyes, the Wildcats will travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to face No. 68-ranked Nevada on Feb. 20 and New Mexico on Feb. 21.
