K-State Travels South to Face 56th-Ranked Ole Miss

MANHATTAN - The Wildcats will make their first of two road trips into the Southeastern Conference this season, with a Feb. 6 meeting with the 56th-ranked Mississippi Lady Rebels in Oxford. This will be the second time K-State will visit Oxford, as the team took part in the Ole Miss Fall Classic, Sept. 24-26, 2004. Freshman Tamar Kvaratskhelia won her first collegiate tournament title and senior Judith Diaz and junior Jessica Simosa captured a doubles title during the fall tournament. Overall, the Wildcats are 0-4 against Ole Miss, with an 0-2 mark in Oxford. The last time these teams met in a dual match was for Jan. 30, 2004 in Manhattan, with the Lady Rebels winning 4-3. Match time in Oxford is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.

The Wildcats made a valiant effort against 25th-ranked BYU, Jan. 28, losing 4-3 in Ahearn Field House. Senior Maria Rosenberg and Kvaratskhelia each won their respective singles matches and K-State captured the doubles point from the Cougars with a 2-1 advantage.

Ole Miss: At a Glance
Head coach Mark Beyers enters his 4th season with an 82-44 career record and 32-36 at the helm of the Lady Rebels. Ole Miss is currently 1-1, dropping its season opener to unranked South Florida, 4-3 and defeated Jacksonville State, 6-1.

The Lady Rebels are currently led by number one singles player, senior Chloe Carlotti. Carlotti is currently 9-4 and a 2-0 mark with spring. The Wildcats did not see Carlotti during the Ole Miss Fall Classic because of a sprained ankle. Other Ole Miss players to keep an eye on is Virginia Tomatis, who has played in the number three position with a 2-0 record and 10-4 overall.

The top doubles pairing for Beyers is Carlotti and Tomatis with an overall record of 8-3 and 2-0 this spring.

Rosenberg vs. Koukhartchouk III?
Maria Rosenberg is familiar with one Lady Rebel, as she played Nika Koukhartchouk twice during the fall season. Koukhartchouk won the first meeting 7-5, 7-5 at the Ole Miss Fall Classic. Rosenberg evened the series with the lefthander with a 6-3, 6-4 win in Los Angeles during the second round of the pre-qualifier of the Riviera/All-American in October.

The two probably will not face each other this time around as Rosenberg will play as K-State’s number one and Koukhartchouk has been playing as Ole Miss’ number four.
