MANHATTAN, Kan. - The 53rd-ranked Kansas State tennis team won its second straight dual match of the season when it knocked off Southwest Missouri State, 6-1, for a ninth straight year on Saturday at Ahearn Field House.
"For the most part we competed pretty well today," Kansas State head coach Steve Bietau said. "I still think we are a long way from a complete match, but it was a nice win."
Kansas State won the doubles point for a second-straight time, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Senior Petra Sedlmajerova and junior Paulina Castillejos improved to 2-0 on the season with an 8-3 win at No. 2 over Marta Rubina and Biljana Gakovic. The duo of junior Hayley McIver and sophomore Maria Rosenberg picked up their first win at No. 3 singles, beating Maria Amato and Laura Alvarez, 8-1. K-State's No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Andrea Cooper and freshman Jessica Simosa dropped to 1-1 this spring after losing 9-7 to Ia Zozrashvili and Cassandra Godfrey.
K-State won five of the six singles matches, including victories for a second consecutive match at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Sedlmajerova beat Zozrashvili at No. 1, 6-1, 6-0 and improved her singles record this year to 7-5. Rosenberg picked up her seventh win of the year with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Godfrey, and Simosa improved to 7-6 overall with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Castillejos dropped her second dual match of the year at No. 4 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Amato. Cooper and McIver each won their first dual matches of the spring. Cooper beat Alvarez 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and McIver downed Gakovic 6-0, 4-6 (4) at No. 6.
