K-State Tennis Sweeps Drake in Season Opener, 7-0
MANHATTAN - Head coach Steve Bietau and his Kansas State (1-0, 0-0) women’s tennis charges opened the 2005 season with a 7-0 victory over the Drake Bulldogs (0-1) on Saturday at Cottonwood Racquet Club. The win was the largest season-opening margin since the Wildcats defeated Southwest Missouri State, January 25, 1998. Senior and No. 109th-ranked Maria Rosenberg continued her march toward the school’s career singles win record with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Zorana Stefanovic. Rosenberg’s career mark now stands at 69-45. Freshman Tamar Kvaratskhelia picked up where she left off over the fall, winning her match over Irina Kalashnikova, 6-1, 6-1. The win was the 16th of her career (16-2). In other singles action, junior Jessica Simosa defeated Eveline Rusdianto, 6-4, 6-1; freshman Olga Klimova defeated Allison Wilkie, 6-2, 6-2; freshman Tereza Prochazkova put down Daria Zawislak, 6-0, 6-0 and freshman Fernanda Da Valle beat Cheen Alkhatib, 6-3, 6-3. The wins by Prochazkova and Da Valle were the first of their careers. In doubles play to begin the day, the pairing of No. 60-ranked Rosenberg/Kvaratskhelia defeated Stefanovic/Wilkie, 8-0; the tandem of Simosa/Klimova beat Kalashnikova/Thomas, 8-1; and senior Judith Diaz/Prochazkova won over Rusdianto/Alkhatib, 8-3. K-State will conclude its two-match homestand January 29 at 4 p.m. in Ahearn Field House against the No. 25-ranked BYU Cougars.
