ATHENS, Ga. The smallest member of the Kansas State tennis team was the biggest thing missing from the court throughout the fall and an injury made Maria Perevoshchikova questionable for the spring season. On Sunday, Perevoshchikova earned her second win in three days and helped Kansas State close out competition at the Georgia Invitational.
Perevoshchikova, whose back injury held her out of fall competition, defeated Troy’s Caroline Jounia in straight sets for her second win of the tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
“I think I played pretty good for the first time back,” Perevoshchikova, the 5-foot-3 sophomore from Russia, said. “I feel ok after these wins.”
Katerina Kudlackova and Olga Klimova rounded out the trio of Wildcats getting their second wins of the tournament. Kudlackova beat Mississippi State’s Elna de Villiers, 6-3, 6-4, and Klimova defeated Mississippi State’s Tatiana Feit in three sets.
In doubles, Kudlackova and Klimova pushed Georgia’s No. 42 ranked pair, Monika Dancevic and Kelley Hyndman, but failed to collect their second upset of a ranked team on the weekend in a 9-7 loss.
Georgia won all three of its doubles matches against K-State on Sunday and went undefeated through the tournament in singles and doubles play before pitting teammates against each other in Sunday’s championship games.
Kansas State returns to Manhattan and will open dual play against Drake on Saturday, Jan. 27, in Ahearn Field House at noon.
