Tennis Team Loses To Kansas At The Big 12 Tournament

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The sixth-seed Kansas State tennis team had its season end Friday with a 4-1 loss to No. 3-seed Kansas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tennis Tournament at the Texas A&M Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
The Wildcats' record dropped to 12-9 overall, while the Jayhawks improved theirs to 16-5. K-State is ranked No. 53 in the latest Omni Hotels Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, while the KU is No. 36.
Kansas State was unable to earn the first point of the match, dropping two of the three doubles matches. The Wildcats' No. 1 doubles team of senior Alena Jecminkova and freshman Andrea Cooper beat Courtney and Kristin Steinbock, 8-1, for the pairs five straight victory. The No. 2 doubles team of senior Kathy Chuda and sophomore Paulina Castillejos where tied 4-4 in their match, but lost the next four of five games to give KU's Paige Brown and Emily Haylock an 8-5 win.
Jecminkova scored K-State's only point of the match when she beat Cheryl Mallaiah at No. 1 singles for the second time this season, 6-1, 6-3. She has won seven of her last eight matches and has an overall record of 18-12 and a dual mark of 14-7.
Cooper went three sets with Aurelie Bejar at No. 5 singles before losing 6-1, 0-6, 6-1. Freshman Maria Rosenberg lost to Brown at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2 and Castillejos fell to Lorenz, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Chuda and junior Petra Sedlmajerova had their singles matches suspended after the outcome was decided.
