Bonacic Earns Win; Baylor Takes Match
MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State freshman Karla Bonacic took advantage of her promotion in the singles lineup, but No. 2 Baylor continued its dominance of the Big 12 with a 6-1 win over the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at the Wamego Recreation Complex.
K-State falls to 6-12 overall and 3-7 in the Big 12, while Baylor improves to 23-2 and 10-0 in the league. Bonacic continued her strong play with her first career victory over a ranked opponent by outlasting No. 61 Taylor Ormand, 4-6, 7-5, 11-9. She is the second Wildcat to earn a win over a ranked opponent this season, as junior Antea Huljev has carded two victories over ranked foes. The product of Split, Croatia was moved to the number three position in the K-State lineup for this weekend's matches after posting a 5-3 record during the last month of matches. "She responded well, but I am not sure it was the move that caused it," stated head coach Steve Bietau of his rookie charge. "She has been playing progressively better for the last couple of months." With the victory, Bonacic improves to 10-15 this season and 5-5 in Big 12 action. She joins fellow freshman Ana Gomez Aleman to reach the 10-win plateau this season. Kansas State will close out the 2010 regular season on Sunday at 1 p.m., as the Wildcats host No. 70 Texas Tech at the Wamego Recreation Complex. Prior to Sunday's match, K-State will honor its lone senior, Natasha Vieira. (2) Baylor (22-2, 10-0 Big 12) at Kansas State (6-12, 3-7 Big 12) |
