K-State Ends Road Skid, Defeats Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. - On the strength of three wins from the bottom half of its singles lineup, Kansas State women's tennis halted a five-match road skid with a 5-2 decision over Missouri on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats are now 6-9 overall and 3-4 in Big 12 action, while Missouri falls to 6-12 and 1-6 in league play. The win was K-State's first Big 12 road victory since March 14, 2008 at Missouri.
K-State opened the match by winning the doubles point for the third straight match. The Wildcats received a pair of 8-2 wins from the number two combination of Nina Sertic and Petra Chuda and the number three duo of Ana Gomez Aleman and Carmen Borau Ramos. The tandem of Gomez Aleman and Borau Ramos have won three straight doubles matches and are 4-5 this spring when paired together.
In singles action, the Wildcats received three straight set wins from the numbers four through six positions in the lineup. At number four singles, Karla Bonacic defeated Maria Christensen 6-2, 6-3. The freshman from Split, Croatia improved her career-best winning streak to four and has now won seven of her last nine outings.
At the number five position, Borau Ramos continued bolstered her career-best winning streak to four matches with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Andrea Lewis. The product of Jaca, Spain is now 6-5 this spring and 4-3 in Big 12 action. During the spring season, Borau Ramos has carded a combined record of 6-1 at the number five and six positions in the K-State lineup.
Sophomore Petra Chuda won her third match in the last four attempts with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Maureen Modesto at the number six position. Chuda, a product of Sokolnice, Czech Republic, is now 11-15 this season in singles action and is 3-3 at the number six spot in the lineup.
Also earning a singles victory for the Wildcats on Sunday was sophomore Nina Sertic. The native of Zagrab, Croatia tallied a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jamie Mera and is 3-1 and 2-1 in Big 12 play at the number three position in the lineup.
Kansas State returns home to close out the regular season with the squad's longest home stand of the season, a four-match stint. The Wildcats will open the home stretch against Oklahoma on April 17 at 11 a.m., followed by a match against Oklahoma State on April 18 at 12 p.m. The matches will be contested at the Wamego Recreation Complex.
