Wildcat Tennis Team Wins Second Match Of The Weekend

BOULDER, Colo. - For the fourth straight year, the Kansas State tennis team won its Big 12 season opener with a 5-2 victory over Colorado this evening in Boulder, Colo., at the Millennium Indoor Courts. Kansas State took the early lead in the match by winning the doubles point. Senior Kathy Chuda and junior Petra Sedlmajerova beat Sarah Burrows and Kendra Strandemo, 8-3 at No. 2 and the win extended the duos winning streak to four straight matches. Chuda and Sedlmajerova are 12-6 on the season. Sophomore Paulina Castillejos and freshman Maria Rosenberg won their match at No. 3, 8-3 over Morgan Sall and Lauren Carey. The Wildcats are 7-5 on the year. K-State's No. 1 doubles team of senior Alena Jecminkova and freshman Andrea Cooper lost 9-7 to Colorado's Dominique Lemperle and Lia Dimingo. The loss snapped a two-match winning streak for the 'Cats and put them at 12-9 on the year. In singles, Colorado took the early lead, 2-1, by winning at No. 1 and No. 2. Lemperle beat Jecminkova, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 1 and Dimingo beat Chuda, 6-2, 7-6 (3) at No. 2. Jecminkova falls to 7-9 on the season and Chuda to 9-7. Kansas State sealed the match and the first conference win of the season by sweeping the remaining singles matches. Sedlmajerova remained undefeated at No. 3 (5-0) by beating Katherine Lutgert, 7-5, 6-4. The junior is 10-6 overall and on a six-match winning streak. Rosenberg ran her record to 10-3 overall and 6-2 at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sall. Cooper won her fourth match of the season at No. 6, beating Strandemo, 6-4, 6-0 and Castillejos evened her record to 6-6 with a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-2) victory over Burrows at No. 5. Kansas State returns to action on Sunday, March 3 when it travels to Lubbock, Texas, to play the Texas Tech Lady Raiders at 10 a.m.
