MANHATTAN, Kan. – Playing its first home match of 2012 on Saturday, No. 52 Kansas State did not disappoint the home crowd as the Wildcats swept past UALR, 7-0, at the Body First Tennis and Fitness Center. This was K-State’s first sweep of the season and its first sweep since April 8, 2011 against Colorado. The win improves K-State to 4-5, while the Trojans fall to 5-6.
Kansas State quickly secured the doubles point with an 8-0 win from the number one tandem of Petra Niedermayerova and Carli Wischhoff and an 8-1 win from the number three pairing of freshmen Marketa Trousilova and Amina St. Hill. The sweep of doubles was finished by the number two duo of Karla Bonacic and Carmen Borau Ramos, 8-5. The junior tandem of Bonacic and Borau Ramos leads the squad with an 8-3 doubles mark together.
In singles action, Niedermayerova continued to roll by improving her winning streak to a career-high eight matches with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Viktoriya Plyuta at number one singles. Niedermayerova, the No. 19 player in the latest Campbell/ITA singles rankings, is 8-1 this spring and owns a 27-5 career record in matches played in the spring.
The Wildcats improved its lead to 3-0, as junior Ana Gomez Aleman halted a personal four-match skid. The product of Murcia, Spain, registered her second win this season with a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Yana Kakovkina.
K-State sealed the win as Bonacic won for the seventh time this spring, sweeping past Veronique Luksich, 6-2, 6-3. The native of Split, Croatia, is now 13-6 this season and owns a career mark of 46-30. She improved to 12-4 in straight set matches this season and 34-26 in her career.
Freshman Marketa Trousilova ended a personal nine-match skid with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Michaela McShane at number four singles. Trousilova’s last win came in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Sept. 18.
Closing out the afternoon for the Wildcats were the second semester newcomers, Wischhoff and St. Hill. Wischhoff evened her career singles record at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Nina Yates at number five singles. St. Hill won her third career singles match and her second straight with a 6-0, 6-0 decisionover Alina Koelgova.
The Wildcats are now 7-2 over the last two seasons in matches played at Body First Tennis and Fitness Center.
Kansas State returns to the road on Wednesday, Feb. 29, as the Wildcats will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to face No. 28 Nebraska at 4 p.m.
