Kansas State Defeats Wichita State In First Home Match Of The Season

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State hosted its first match of the season Sunday at Ahearn Field House by winning every match and defeating the Wichita State Shockers, 7-0. The No. 50 Wildcats are now 3-2 after beginning the year with four matches on the road. Kansas State's Alena Jecminkova defeated the Shockers' No. 1 singles player, Amanda Cervantes, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Cervantes entered the match with a 5-2 record and was on a three-match winning streak. It was the only match that went to three sets. Sophomore Paulina Castillejos and freshman Andrea Cooper both shut out their individual opponents, beating senior Martina Stojkic and senior Sarah Beth Danqos 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Freshman Maria Rosenberg, a Manhattan High graduate, improved her 8-3 singles record with a win over Martina Stojkic at the No. 3 singles position, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Petra Sedlmajerova also improved her 7-6 singles record with a win over Annelie van den Heever at No. 2 at singles 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Haley McIver is now 4-3 on the year after beating Natalia Guzman, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. In doubles, Jecminkova and Sedlmajerova defeated Shockers Cervantes and van den Heever at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. The Wildcats' No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams won their matches by a score of 8-1 each. Kansas State returns to action Friday when it hosts SW Missouri State at 9a.m. at Cottonwood Country Club.
