MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 53 Kansas State needed a rally, included a marathon win at number two singles, to secure a 4-2 win over No. 55 Fresno State on Friday at the Body First Tennis and Fitness Center. The Wildcats have now won four straight matches for the first time since Jan. 21-Feb. 19, 2011 when K-State opened the season with a seven-match win streak.

The afternoon’s match between the Wildcats and Bulldogs used experimental formats set up by the ITA. All of the singles and doubles were played to six games, with regular scoring and tiebreakers at 6-all. If a singles match splits sets, a match tiebreaker was played instead of a third set. Doubles play was halted after a winner was decided.

The Wildcats (4-1) quickly captured the doubles point with wins at number one and two doubles. Head coach Steve Bietau utilized the doubles lineup he used against Liberty on Feb. 1, and was rewarded with similar results.

At number one doubles, Petra Niedermayerova and Amina St. Hill registered a 6-1 win over the No. 41 ranked Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) doubles pair of Aishwarya Agrawal and Claire Yang. This was just the second time Niedermayerova and St. Hill were paired together and the duo is now 2-0 together.

With the doubles victory, Niedermayerova boosted her career doubles record to 67-44 to move into a tie for second on the K-State career doubles wins list. With seven more doubles victory, she will become the K-State career record holder for doubles wins.

The Wildcats registered the doubles point, as the number two tandem of freshmen Palma Juhasz and Iva Bago tallied a 6-4 win over Rana Sherif Ahmed and Sophie Watts. This was the first result for the duo of Juhasz and Bago, as the pair saw their match halted last weekend.

Fresno State (1-4) took a 2-1 lead with singles wins at the number three and one positions in the lineup.

The match turned back in K-State’s favor, as Juhasz won her third straight match at number four singles. The freshman from Debrecen, Hungary, carded a 7-5, 6-2 win over Sofya Malysheva. Juhasz upped her record to 9-6 which includes an 8-3 mark in straight set matches.

Bago won the critical singles match of the afternoon for K-State at number two singles. The rookie from Velika, Croatia endured a two-hour and 54-minute match to defeat Sherif Ahmed, 7-5, 6-7 (7-5), 1-0 (11-9), in her second career match at the number two position in the lineup. Bago is 9-7 this season and has won six of her last seven singles matches.

Cirnu secured the victory for K-State at number five singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Anne Susdorf. Cirnu has now won four straight matches for the first time in her career and owns a record of 10-7.

K-State will conclude its four-match home stand on Saturday, as the Wildcats host former Big 12 member Colorado at 2 p.m. The match will be played indoors at the Body First Tennis and Fitness Center and is free and open to the public.
