MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State faced an early deficit on Friday afternoon against Northern Iowa, but the Wildcats rebounded in a big way to secure its fourth straight win in a home opener with a 6-1 decision at the Body First Tennis and Fitness Center. Friday's match was the start of a four-match home stand for the Wildcats.
The afternoon's match between the Wildcats and Panthers used experimental formats set up by the ITA. All of the singles and doubles were played to six games, with regular scoring and tiebreakers at 6-all. If a singles match splits sets, a match tiebreaker was played instead of a third set
In doubles action, the duo of Petra Niedermayerova and Palma Juhasz secured an early 6-1 win over Jeika Stroobant and Jordyn Kearney at the number one position. The win improves the duo's record to 3-1 this season. With the victory, Niedermayerova boosted her career doubles record to 65-44 to move into a tie for fourth on the K-State career doubles win list. With two more doubles victories, she will move into a tie for second and nine doubles wins will put Niedermayerova atop the list.
The Panthers rebounded from the defeat at number one doubles to secure the overall doubles point with a pair of 6-4 wins at number two and three.
In singles, K-State bounced back quickly to capture a 2-1 advantage over the Panthers. Freshman Iva Bago defeated Astrid Santos, 6-3, 6-2, at number three singles. Bago is 7-7 this season and has won four of her last five singles matches.
Niedermayerova followed Bago's win with a win of her own at number one singles. Niedermayerova, ranked No. 42 in the national ITA singles rankings, swept past Stroobant, 6-2, 6-2. She has now won four straight matches and six of her last seven matches dating back to the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in November.
The product of Brno, Czech Republic, is 12-4 this season, owns a career mark of 75-21 in straight set matches including a 10-2 record this season.
Niedermayerova, a two-time ITA All-American and three-time All-Big 12 singles selection, improved her school record for career singles wins 92-37 (.713). Her career singles winning percentage of .713 ranks second in program history.
Maria Panaite ended a two-match skid and gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead with a win at number two singles. The freshman from Velika, Croatia, downed Elvira Lopez at number two singles, 6-0, 6-2. Panaite is now 5-7 this season and improved to 4-5 in straight set matches.
Juhasz secured the win for the Wildcats at number four singles. The freshman from Debrecen, Hungary, carded a 6-0, 6-2 win over Krissy Lankelma to end a two-match skid. Juhasz improved to upped her record to 7-6 which includes a 6-3 mark in straight set matches.
Junior Amina St. Hill captured her fourth straight win with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number five singles over Kearney. The win improved St. Hill's record to 8-6 this season and makes her career record 28-34.
Freshman Livia Cirnu closed out the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sydney Wolfe at number six singles. Cirnu has now won consecutive matches for the first time in her career and owns a record of 8-7.
K-State will close out the weekend on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats host Liberty at 12 p.m. The match will be played at the Body First Tennis and Fitness Center and is free and open to the public.
