K-State Opens Season with Win
DES MOINES, Iowa - Kansas State women's tennis extended its win streak in season-openers to six, as the Wildcats defeated Northern Iowa on Saturday evening at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center on the Drake University campus.
K-State (1-0) secured the crucial doubles point, as the number one tandem of Antea Huljev and Nina Sertic defeated Talia Jang-Stewart and Sampada Kanade, 8-1, and the number three pairing of Natasha Vieira and Maryna Chumak set back Stefannia Sampaio and Jessica Kunzelmann, 8-1. Huljev and Sertic are now 8-5 this season, while Vieira and Chumak boosted their record together to 2-2. In singles action, freshman Ana Gomez Aleman brought her career record to 7-7 by defeating Laia Gonzalez-Garrido at number two singles, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Nina Sertic stopped a personal three-match skid with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kunzelmann at number four singles. Freshman Maryna Chumak won her second straight singles match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Stefannia Sampaio at number five singles. Vieira got her final spring dual season for the Wildcats off on the right foot with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Jang-Stewart at number six singles. Vieira is now 6-8 this season.
