Kansas State Tennis Team Loses Season Opener

Manhattan, Kan. - No. 51-ranked Arizona won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches to hand the No. 52-ranked Kansas State tennis team a 6-1 loss today in its season opener and first dual match at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. Kansas State is 0-1 on the season, while Arizona moves to 1-0. Senior Kathy Chuda won Kansas State's only singles point with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Diane Hollands at No. 3. Chuda also teamed with junior Petra Sedlmajerova at No. 2 doubles to beat Marie-Pier Pouliot and Laresa Marino, 8-6. In singles, No. 70 Alena Jecminkova lost to No. 89 Maja Mlakar, 6-3, 6-4. Sedlmajerova lost at No. 2 to No. 54 Debbie Larocque, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Maria Rosenberg took Perrine Pernine to three sets but fell 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Sophomore Paulina Castillejos lost to Pouliot at No. 5, 6-3, 6-3 and freshman Andrea Cooper lost in three sets to Brooke Taylor, 5-7, 6-0, 6-0. Mlakar and Larocque defeated Kansas State's No. 1 doubles team of Jecminkova and Cooper, 8-4, and Hollands and Pernin beat Rosenberg and Castillejos, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles. Kansas State returns to action tomorrow when they play No. 58 New Mexico at 11 a.m. |
