K-State Hosts Jayhawks in Sunflower Showdown

MANHATTAN, Kan. In its final competition of the fall season the Kansas State women's rowing team will take on in-state rival Kansas in the 10th annual Sunflower Showdown on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Tuttle Creek Lake Reservoir. The first event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

K-State leads the all-time series 5-4 over the Jayhawks. The Wildcats have won three-straight before losing last year’s Showdown. K-State will have six boats in the competition, while Kansas will enter eight boats.

The event is a 2,000 meter, side-by-side race format. It will be the first time of the season for the Wildcats to compete in this particular style of race. All other fall races have been Head races, where the distance is between 4,000 and 5,000 meters and the boats race in a time trial format.

Last year’s showdown saw K-State win two out of the first three races, before dropping the final two. The Second Varsity 8+ and First Novice 8+ both claimed victories last year.

In the 2006 fall season opener, the Wildcats won the Collegiate Novice 8+ race at the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Oklahoma City. K-State also placed three boats in the top-13 in the Varsity 8+ head race.

The K-State Novice 8+ continued its winning ways by claiming first place at the Head of the Iowa for the second straight season on Oct. 29. The Wildcats turned in a winning-time of 15:07.29 finishing ahead of Big Ten Conference powerhouse Wisconsin and the host Iowa.

Directions to Manhattan and Tuttle Creek Lake Reservoir: Exit 1-70 at Highway 177 (exit 313) and head North on 177 until reaching Manhattan. Remain in the right lane as you cross over the bridge and exit right to Hwy 24. Turn left at the bottom of the exit ramp onto Tuttle Creek Blvd/Hwy 24. Go North on Tuttle Creek Blvd -

24/State 177 (approx. 3.5 miles). Turn right onto State Hwy 13 toward the Tuttle Creek Dam. Proceed across the length of the dam and spillway (approx. 1.5 miles). Take first left onto Spillway Marina Drive and the next left will be Victory Drive (KSU Boathouse Driveway). Follow directions from event staff on where to park and how to proceed to the race viewing area.
