K-State Rowing to Host Sunflower Showdown

Manhattan, Kan.-The Kansas State rowing team ends the fall portion of their schedule this weekend when they host the University of Kansas in the annual Sunflower Showdown at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, at Tuttle Creek Reservoir. K-State will be looking to win the showdown for the second straight year after a 24-0 victory over the Jayhawks last season.

In the annual event, points will be awarded to the winner of each race. To open the showdown, K-State will take on KU in the second novice eight race at 9:00 a.m., with the winner taking three points. The varsity four race follows at 9:10 a.m., with the winner earning four points.

A pair of five point races follow, with the first novice eight competing at 9:20 a.m. and the second varsity eight racing at 9:30 a.m.

After the third novice eight race at 9:50 a.m., with the winning team gaining one point, the first varsity eight race takes center stage. The winner of the 10:00 a.m. race will take home eight valuable points.

The Wildcats will look to have a repeat of last year's performance when they shut-out the Jayhawks. It was the first time in the series history a team had won every race.

In order to accomplish the feat, the Wildcats will need another strong performance from its top varsity team. Coxswain Elane Walker, Linzi Hauldren, Courtney Franssen, Lara Schrock, Angela Murray, Grace Riekenberg, Amiee Finkbeiner, Lori Holcomb and Hannah Langenwalter will look to lead the Wildcats to their third straight victory in the series.

The dual meet marks the end of the fall season for the Wildcats. Kansas State will open the spring season on March 6, 2004, when they host Creighton University at Tuttle Creek Reservoir.
