Results In for Head of the Des Moines Regatta

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State women's rowing team competed in the Head of the Des Moines on Saturday, Sept. 28. The three open 8+ boats finished in third, fifth and 12th in the 16-team race, trailing the winner, Iowa, by 1:01 in the 16-boat race. The two open 4+ entries for K-State did not fair as well finishing in 16th (20:47) and 20th (21:31) overall, as Iowa won for the second time (18:30).
Leading the way in the open 8+ race was the K-State "A" boat, with coxswain Elane Walker guiding Lindsay Gourlay, Alyssa Adams, Amy Herrmann, Carissa Land, Courtney Franssen, Katie Baxter, Carina Winberry and Amiee Finkbeiner from stern to bow with a time of 17:07. In fifth place was the K-State "B" group consisting of Talara Wait, Lori Holcomb, Lara Schrock, Ingrid Shwaiko, Linzi Hauldren, Angela Murray, Grace Riekenberg, Jamie Holt and coxswain Brandy Sherwood with a time of 17:25. Finally, Marja-Lisa Paulson, Susie Truax, Renee Ecklund, Abby Betzen, Jessica Carmer, Crystal Borhani, Kelsey Cook and Terri Keeler along with coxswain Katrina Regehr finished 12th in the K-State "C" boat.
In the open 4+ race the K-State "B" boat of Stephanie Riegle (cox), Borhani, Amber Jaklevich, Betzen and Keeler, finished in 16th, 2:17 behind the first-place boat from Iowa. The other entry, K-State "A", finished in 20th, 3:01 back of the winner.
"I felt that the fours did a nice job for their experience," Hale said. "They did a good job on following through on their race objectives."
The other race for the 'Cats was the open pairs, where K-State placed five of eight boats in the top 10. Leading the Wildcats were Schrock/Holcomb in second with 19:46, 28-seconds behind the first-place boat from Iowa. The remaining Kansas State finisher's were, in fifth Baxter/Franssen, 20:03, in eighth Land/Hermann, 20:18, in ninth Adams/Winberry, 20:26, in 10th Paulson/Shwaiko, 20:45, in 11th Gourlay/Hauldren, 21:12, in 13th Holt/Wait, 21:28, and in 15th Finkbeiner/Murray, 21:40.
Next up will be the first and only chance to catch the oarswomen at home during the fall season. The team is holding an intra-squad race at Tuttle Creek Lake, on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 7-11 a.m.
