DES MOINES, Iowa In its fall season opener, the Kansas State women’s rowing team held on to a 10-second lead to edge past regional rival Iowa in the Women’s Open Four race at the Head of the Des Moines regatta held Saturday on the Des Moines River.
The Kansas State “A” boat comprised of coxswain Stephanie Black, Linzi Hauldren, Grace Riekenberg, Danielle Scott and Megan Hauver, crossed the finish line with a winning time of 22:30, while the Hawkeyes came in second at 22:40. Of the 28 boats competing in the event, K-State’s additional fours placed 10th (“B”, 24:04), 11th (“C”, 24:05) and 12th (“D”, 24:44) respectively.
In the Women’s Open Eight race, K-State’s “B” boat led by Black, Hauldren, Hannah Langenwalter, Morgan Steele, Riekenberg, Scott, Kaci Williams, Katie Williams and Hauver, trailed Iowa’s top boat by only four-seconds to finish second with a time of 19:41. K-State’s “A” boat placed fifth behind Tulsa and Creighton (20:36), to give the Wildcats four top 10 finishes in both races combined.
“We were quite pleased with how well the team did today,” head coach Patrick Sweeney said. “With such a young team this year, the “B” boat did a very good job behind Iowa in the eights as did the “A” boat in the fours. They (fours) battled Iowa all the way and their racing showed they were on target.”
The Wildcats continue fall rowing competition on Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Head of the Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
