Second Varsity Eight Places Eighth at Central Region Championships
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. The Kansas State Second Varsity Eight shell placed eighth overall on the final day of the Central Region Championships held Sunday at Melton Hill Lake. Providing the program’s second-best finish in the 2V8 since 1998 (7th overall) was the squad of coxswain Claire Johnson, Jamie Holt, Stacey Waldman, Katie Williams, Kristin Alstatt, Megan Burki, Sarah Jo Trapp, Magda Hart and Jacque Crockford. In the C Final of the event, the Wildcats clocked in a fourth-place time of 7:09.0 ahead of crews from Cincinnati, Kansas and Miami (Fla.). “We sort of expected the results, because of the good competition from the other crews in our region,” Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said. “But, you always want to finish better than you do. It was a much better day for us than yesterday and the team technically rowed better. It wasn’t a disaster and as we continue to build the program, we’ll be right there with those teams. We have the system in place to do so. Now, we just need to make it work.” Fourth-ranked Ohio State finished first in the overall Central Region standings with 366 points, followed by No. 14 Wisconsin (324), No. 7 Michigan (317), No. 3 Michigan State (294) and Notre Dame (262) to round out the top five. The Wildcats placed 20th overall and 11th in the Central Region. The top finishers in each region earned an automatic bid to the upcoming 2005 NCAA Championships on May 27-29 in Sacramento, Calif.
