Rowers to Compete at Big 12 Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State women’s rowing team will compete against conference rivals Kansas and Texas in the 2007 Big 12 Rowing Invitational to be held on Sunday, April 29, at Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kan. K-State will serve as the host for this year’s event.

This will mark the seventh season in which the invitational has been held between the three schools. The regatta will be held away from Manhattan, Lawrence or Austin for the second straight season. K-State hosted the inaugural race in 2001 at the Tuttle Creek Reservoir in Manhattan and was set to host again in 2004 but poor weather conditions cancelled the invitational.

Last season the Wildcats tied for second with KU. K-State’s 1N8+ opened the event with a victory beating out second place Texas by eight seconds. The Varsity Four and the Second Varsity Eight placed second while the First Varsity Eight finished third.

The Wildcats have already raced against Kansas in head-to-head competition this season but this will be the first time they will meet the Longhorns. In a close finish Kansas took the Kansas Cup on April 7.

Racing is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning and will feature six races. K-State will compete in five of the six races including the Second Varsity Four, First Novice Eight, First Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Eight.

Directions to Wyandotte County Lake & Park (Beach Shelter location): From I-70 take I-435 North to Leavenworth Road (Exit 15). Travel east 1.7 miles to 91st Street. Take 91st Street North of Leavenworth Road which will bring you into the park. When water is in view make a left turn and then make a right hand turn at the ballfields. The Beach Shelter is located 1.5 miles from the main lake entrance.
