April 23, 2014MANHATTAN, Kan. - The 1st Varsity 8 was named Big 12 Boat of the Week for its impressive showing at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship Regatta. The 1V8 crew of coxswain Hillary Schartz and rowers Meggie Murray, Noelle Dykmann, Lisa Angell, Brittany Long, Allison Dorau, Ashley Houser, Erin Roeser and Madi Haney went a perfect 3-0 on the weekend, including becoming the first Wildcat 1V8 to earn SIRA gold since 2003-04.
Throughout the regatta, the 1V8 held off spirited competition from Nova Southeastern. First in the semifinal, the 1V8 won by its smallest margin of the weekend, finishing the race in 6:59.7, a little over three seconds better than the Sharks' final time of 7:02.9. The Grand Final was just as competitive with the Wildcats finishing exactly four seconds ahead of second-place finisher Nova Southeastern in a time of 6:58.90.
The gold medal winning effort closed out an overall dominant performance by K-State Women's Rowing at SIRA. The Wildcats racked up five gold medals and one bronze medal, and went a combined 13-1 on the weekend.
This is third weekly accolade of the season and second from the Big 12 Conference for the 1V8 squad. The crew earned Conference USA Boat of the Week and Co-Big 12 Boat of the Week in back-to-back weeks at the start of April for their strong showings at the Sunflower Showdown and San Diego Crew Classic. Add in the 2nd Varsity 8 earning Big 12 Boat of the Week in late March and the Wildcat rowers have earned the Big 12 weekly honor three out of the four weeks it has been awarded this season.
K-State has this week off from action before competing in the first of its two conference championship meets next weekend. The Wildcats will head to Oklahoma City for the Big 12 Championships on May 3. More information on the Wildcats' upcoming championship regatta can be found by visiting www.k-statesports.com.
