Wildcats Advance Four Shells at Southern Intercollegiate
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. The Kansas State women’s rowing team advanced four shells to Sunday’s “A” level final at the 37th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta held Saturday at Melton Hill Lake. K-State’s Novice Eight boat coxed by Claire Johnson and comprised of Magda Hart, Kaci Williams, Danielle Scott, Morgan Steele, Veronica Noonan, Larissa Kesler, Katie Williams and Jacque Crockford placed second with a semifinal time of 7:25.30, a half-second behind Tennessee (7:24.80). The Wildcats, however, beat out crews from George Mason and SMU. The Novice Four squad of Julie Tharp (coxswain), Heather Martin, Stacey Waldman, Amy Wagner and Rachel Freeman also advanced to tomorrow’s “A” final after winning their respective heat and semifinal race against teams from Georgia Tech, Florida, Murray State and the College of Charleston. In the final race of the day, K-State was once again on top in the Women’s Varsity Eight competition. The Wildcats’ top boat of Elane Walker (coxswain), Linzi Hauldren, Courtney Franssen, Lara Schrock, Angela Murray, Grace Riekenberg, Amiee Finkbeiner, Lori Holcomb and Megan Hauver finished ahead (7:04.00) of crews from Dayton (7:06.00), Purdue (7:06.00) and Cincinnati in the race semifinals. With the third fastest time in the event, K-State advanced to tomorrow’s final along with Central Florida, Tennessee, SMU, Dayton and Purdue. K-State will wrap-up competition at the two-day regatta tomorrow with races beginning at 8 a.m. (ET). All four boats, including the team’s Second Varsity Eight squad, will be vying for places 1-6.
