K-State Gears Up For Cross-State Rival KU, Cincinnati
MANHATTAN, Kan. State bragging rights are on the line as the Kansas State rowing team gears up for cross-state rival Kansas and Cincinnati in this weekend’s Kansas Cup regatta held Saturday, April 10 in Lawrence, Kan. Since rowing became a varsity sport at K-State in 1996 and at KU in 1995, the Wildcats and Jayhawks have battled in the annual spring competition on seven occasions with the hosting site changing every two years. Last season, host K-State defeated KU by 6.4 seconds in the First Varsity Eight race at Tuttle Creek Lake. However, KU won the balance of the races and thus took home the Kansas Cup title. Joining this year’s Kansas Cup lineup is Cincinnati, which brings its top varsity crews to compete head-to-head with the Sunflower State’s best on the Kansas River. The Bearcats are coming off three race victories at Indiana. “All of our boats should be confident heading into this weekend,” Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said. “However, we have to be careful as Kansas has perennially proved to be a strong opponent in the spring time.” Competition begins Saturday at 10 a.m., while all remaining races will follow in 15-minute intervals. Complete race results can be accessed at: www.kuathletics.com and www.k-statesports.com. Directions to the Kansas River: From the Kansas Turnpike (I-70) take West Lawrence exit #202. Go thru first stop light, then turn left at 4th Street. Take 4th St. to third top sign, turn left on Indiana St. Follow Indiana St. two blocks then turn right into Burcham Park at 2nd and Indiana.
