Wildcats Go Head-To-Head With KU In State Rivalry Rematch
MANHATTAN, Kan. Head-to-head competition with in-state rival Kansas is on the agenda for the Kansas State women’s rowing team as the battle for the Kansas Cup gets underway for both squads on Saturday, April 9 at Tuttle Creek Lake. Since rowing became a varsity sport at K-State in 1996 and at KU in 1995, the Wildcats and Jayhawks have dueled in the annual spring competition on eight occasions with each school hosting the event every other year at their home site. The Wildcats last won the title during the 1997-98 season. Last spring, KU won the balance of the races and took home the Kansas Cup. However, this fall, K-State claimed the team victory in the Sunflower Showdown (fall dual between K-State and KU). “The in-state rivalry with KU brings out the best in both teams,” Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said. “The weekend’s races should prove to be quite heated.” Competition begins Saturday at 9 a.m. while all remaining races will follow in 10-minute intervals. Complete race results can be accessed at: www.k-statesports.com. Directions to Manhattan and Tuttle Creek Lake Reservoir: Exit 1-70 at Highway 177 (exit 313) and head North on 177 until reaching Manhattan.
