AUSTIN, Texas The Kansas State rowers completed the three-day Longhorn Invitational on Sunday with four races against Iowa on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. The teams were close to pulling in their first victories of the challenging regatta, but were edged by the Hawkeyes in the Second Varsity 8+ and First Novice 8+.
Iowa defeated K-State in the first head-to-head battle with the Second Novice 8+ boats. During the First Novice 8+ race, the Wildcats put together a cleaner race but could not overcome the quick Iowa crew.
During the varsity racing, K-State tested the Second Varsity 8+ boat of Iowa and very nearly came away with the win. The Wildcats captured a small lead out of the blocks and fought to increase their lead over the next 1500 meters. K-State was up by about four seats heading into the final 500 meters. Iowa attacked with a strong sprint, overcoming the Cats in just the last 15 strokes. The final margin was less than two seconds.
The First Varsity 8+ boats closed the Longhorn Invitational. K-State put together their best race of the weekend in an aggressive and committed performance. However, Iowa crossed the line ahead of K-State.
“This weekend was a learning experience for all our crews, especially against such highly-ranked teams,” head coach Pat Sweeney said. “We now need to buckle down and put in the hard work in the areas of weakness that were exposed this weekend. We did show improvement and a fighting attitude, so that was good to see.”
The Wildcats will next travel to one of the nation’s largest competitions, the San Deigo Crew Classic, which is set to take place on April 5th and 6th. For complete coverage of the Wildcat rowing squad, please visit
