Rowing opens spring season at Longhorn Invitational
MANHATTAN - The Kansas State rowing team opens the 2004 spring season this weekend when it travels to Austin, Texas, for the Longhorn Invitational. The five-team dual meet will feature the Wildcats, No. 14 Texas, No. 18 Duke, No. 20 Iowa, Southern Methodist and Tulsa.
"This is and excellent opportunity for the Varsity Boats to see how they stand against nationally ranked crews," said head coach Patrick Sweeney. "We are not under any pressure in this situation, the pressure is on the competition. Our training has been quite good, our technique is coming along and we are ready to test ourselves against good competition. This is a great race for our Novice boats as well," commented Sweeney. "It is a good way for them to gain a lot of experience in just a few days time. We will see how the Novice stack up against our region at this time."
Each team will have a dual race with one another, beginning Friday and ending Sunday, with each participating school racing each other head-to-head once. The Wildcats open up on Friday at 4 p.m. when its second novice eight team squares off against Texas, followed by the first novice
Last year at the Longhorn Invitational, the Wildcats posted wins over Tulsa and SMU in the 1V8, 2V* and 1N8. The Cats were not as successful against Duke and Texas, taking home losses to those teams. This year will be the first time that KSU takes on Iowa at the Longhorn Invitational.
