Women's Rowing Finishes in Top 25 at Head of the Charles
Oct. 21, 2001
BOSTON, Mass. - The Kansas State championship 8+ entry finished 24th in a field of 53 boats Sunday at the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass. The championship 8+ boat of Samantha Allen , Katy Bockelman , Lori Holcomb , Carissa Land, Josie McClellan, Lara Schrock , Brandy Sherwood , Amy Herrmann , and Glenna Yokum posted a time of 17:20.5 after one athlete caught a crab, which is losing control of an oar, in the first mile of the race. "I watched the first mile," head rowing coach Jenny Hale said. "They looked good and then someone caught a crab, so that stopped the boat. You just can't make that kind of mistake. If you do, you have to recover using extraordinary measures, which we did not do. "Mistakes are going to happen and you have to learn from them. We were clearly disappointed that they didn't row up to their potential. We beat ourselves today." US Rowing took first with a time of 16:01.1, followed by Princeton University (16:10.9) and London Training Center (16:17.8) to round out the top three. The Kansas State rowing team will return to action on Oct. 28 at the Head of the Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
