Wildcats Finish Second at Big 12 Invitational Rowing
May 4, 2002
AUSTIN, Texas - Kansas State used a second-place finish in the first varsity eights to earn second place in the final team standings Saturday at the Big 12 Invitational Rowing Championships held at Town Lake.
Host Texas won the team standings with 55 points, while the Wildcats and Kansas tied for second with 44 points. Points were awarded among the three schools for places in each of the five events.
The Kansas State first varsity eight rowed one of its best times ever on the Town Lake Course, finishing second in 6:46.4. The Wildcats were less than five seconds behind Texas on Saturday, cutting into a nine-second margin they were behind the Longhorns in mid-March.
"I think we had pretty good improvement in the times on this course and the margins we've been off Texas," said K-State head coach Jenny Hale. "Both varsity eights got beat off the line and had to row from behind. Strategically, that's not a great way to go and it's physiologically a harder way to race. But I'm proud of how we got back into both races."
The second varsity eight finished third behind Texas and Kansas, but also cut into margins from both last week's Kansas Cup and the Longhorn Invitational.
"The second varsity eight had their best race of the season," said Hale. "I was proud of them. They made up considerable ground on both those boats."
K-State also placed second in the second novice eights race, while finishing third in the first novice eights and the varsity fours.
"Texas is very deep," Hale said of the overall competition. "Obviously, they had good races all day long in that they only lost one race (the fours)."
Kansas State will have next weekend off before racing in the Central Division Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on May 18 and 19.
